An ignition interlock device (IID) is a complex switch that uses a breathalyzer to test for the detection of alcohol before starting the vehicle. Keep in mind that the barrier for detection is low and for the state of Colorado the handsets are set for .025 BAC.
Pass the test and your vehicle will be allowed to start. If you fail the test, your vehicle will not start. Its that simple. Note, the interlock device will never shut off your vehicle. It will only prevent it from being started.
Each vehicle is different and the sophistication gets more complex each and every year. Especially with hybrids and EV. The general principal is that the Interlock device is installed where it controls whether or not your starter will engage. It is important that you choose an interlock shop that has certified installers who understand the electronics involved.
The three authorized vendors must be approved by the state of Colorado and their devices must pass the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) standards.
This does not mean that the devices will not fail. Like all electronics, they must be maintained and occasionally replaced or repaired. The interlock devices must be calibrated at least every two months to ensure that they are accurately measuring and detecting alcohol.
These devices will often need to be replaced or repaired. Whether it is the handset, cord, wiring harness or the relay. Make sure you understand what the process is for replacing or repairing equipment. Do they have them in stock or must you wait until equipment can be ordered. Do you have to set an appointment or can that be addressed immediately.
It is our opinion, that the equipment has become very similar and the reliability about the same. The biggest difference is in the service and how they treat you. How helpful, will the interlock provider be if you have problems with the device or the DMV.
Each interlock provider must have at least one corporate shop that interacts on your behalf when you have issues with the DMV. How easy is it to comply with your required monthly or bimonthly monitoring. Do they require appointments? How fast can you get in and out.
It is our opinion, that the monthly lease charge that each vendor charges is usually about the same. They may complicate things with different periods, calibration charges but in general they tend to move their monthly lease prices in tandem.
The biggest savings is usually in the installation promotions. They all differ in this and it is constantly changing. In general, the installation cost is usually around $150 -350 dollars depending on the vehicle. This is the one area where you will find that they differ and often they will waive this charge.
Most will honor other vendor's promotions so in the end, choose the vendor that you believe will offer you the best service. Remember, most of you will be going to them for the next 2 years.
